7 Inspiring Quotes from Smart Women

I’m actually a little surprised at how many of the quotes I live by came from women.

Insert gay joke here.

Honestly, though, I’m really not sure being gay has anything to do with it. Maybe I read more? That seems a little, what? Sexist? What is the opposite of misogynist? Frankly, just about any reason I could ascribe to it–women are more caring, women think deeper, whatever–ends up sounding like I think there is something inherently better about women just because they’re women … really don’t want to go there.

But the fact remains, there are more intelligent things said by intelligent women stuck in my head than intelligent things said by intelligent men. For example:

“I have no romantic feelings about age. Either you are interesting at any age or you are not. There is nothing particularly interesting about being old – or being young, for that matter.” –Katharine Hepburn

I could probably fill this whole post with nothing but quotes from Kate the Great. But I will show restraint.

“I don’t know why, some people fill the gaps and others emphasize my loneliness.” –Anais Nin

I find Ms. Nin, as a rule, romantic to the point of naivete … but in all fairness, I think she thought that of herself, as well.

“Perhaps when we find ourselves wanting everything, it is because we are dangerously close to wanting nothing.” — Sylvia Plath

I have noticed this tendency in my own desires.

“The internet can be great for speed and efficiency but it can be unemotional.” –Nayna McIntosh

Ms. McIntosh is the founder of the women’s clothing brand Hope Fashion, and one of 2018′s “Top Female Entrepreneurs in the UK.” I think of this quote every time I go to write an email instead of sending a letter or card. Every. Single. Time.

“We need to accept that we won’t always make the right decisions, that we’ll screw up royally sometimes—understanding that failure is not the opposite of success, it’s part of the success.” —Arianna Huffington

As in, The Huffington Post. Yeah, her.

“Define success in your own terms, achieve it by your own rules, and build a life you’re proud to live.” — Anne Sweeney

Ms. Sweeney has been the co-chair of Disney Media, President of the Disney–ABC Television Group, and the President of Disney Channel. Now she’s a director. I don’t even like Disney but I like her.

“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” –Eleanor Roosevelt

Another one of those lessons learned long after I really needed it. But let’s not bring my dad into this, hmm?

“No one learns more about a problem than the person at the bottom.” –Sandra Day O’Connor

Oh lord, ain’t that the truth?

Ok, one more, that kinda puts all the rest of this in perspective:

“Just before our love got lost you said/’I am as constant as a northern star’/and I said, ‘Constantly in the darkness? Where’s that at?/ If you want me I’ll be in the bar’” –Joni Mitchell

The moral of the story? No matter how good a quote sounds, if it’s just an empty platitude, who cares?
